Come home in the same state

Overview

As a server you are the public face of the restaurant. You handle serving customer service and part of restaurant operations and it is largely you who determines whether the guest has a good experience. The training makes you a skilled host who masters both the practical craft and the art of making people feel welcome.

What do you do in everyday life?

You receive guests, recommend dishes and beverages, take orders, and serve so everything comes out at the right time. You set tables, manage multiple tables at once, and work closely with the kitchen. You also work with payment, wine, and beverages and help create the right atmosphere in the space — even when it's full.

  • 01You learn to provide good service and read guests' needs.
  • 02You get knowledge about food, wine, and beverages, so you can advise and recommend.
  • 03You become quick, reliable and good at working under pressure.
  • 04You develop strong social skills that can be used everywhere.
  • 05You become part of a trade with jobs across the entire country and opportunity to travel abroad.
  • 06You get professional pride in a craft where details in serving matter.

How do you get started?

The education typically starts with a basic course at a vocational school, where you learn the fundamentals of serving, guest service, and restaurant operations. You then enter an education agreement with a restaurant or hotel, where you alternate between school and practice as a student and receive pay during your education.

Way forward

With the journeyman's certificate you can work in restaurants hotels and cafés and with experience you can become head waiter head waiter or stand at the head of a service team. Many waiters also work abroad and the service trade also opens doors to jobs in hospitality events and experience economy.

“Food makes a restaurant good – but it is the hospitality that gets the guest to return.”
