How it looks Bricklayer out in practice

Visual templates showing the profession's typical work activities — so you can see what you are getting into.

The craft in action

Bricklayer builds cavity wall

The bricklayer applies mortar to a brick from a horizontal course line and a level, while copper wire ties bind the outer leaf to the inner leaf across the cavity, and open perp joints at the bottom lead water out.

Bricklayer joints and plasters

The bricklayer leads a pointing trowel diagonally down through the joints and smooths the mortar: some joints are already smooth and filled, others still need it, while the mortar bucket waits at the foot.

Come home in the same state

Overview

As a bricklayer you build in stone — you lay brick facades, lay tiles and roof tiles, plaster walls and cast foundations. You help raise houses from the ground and restore old buildings so they last for many years. You become a classic craftsperson whose work is in full view of everyone and must be straight, strong and beautiful.

What do you do in everyday life?

Your day is on construction sites inside and out. You mix and lay mortar set stones in bond plaster and tile and you constantly check with level and plumb that everything is straight. You work with both heavy materials and fine plaster work and you cooperate with other trades on the site so building progresses.

  • 01You learn to bond stone with mortar in masonry.
  • 02You learn to polish and finish walls.
  • 03You learn to lay tiles and clinkers
  • 04You learn to lay roofs with roof tiles
  • 05You learn to cast and make foundations and floors.
  • 06You learn to work with plumb line, level, and measuring.
  • 07You learn to restore and repair old masonry.

How do you get started?

You start on a basic course and find a training placement with a master bricklayer or contractor. The main course alternates between school and training in the company, and you are paid while you learn the trade. On site you learn from experienced journeymen who show you the techniques and the pace of a real construction job.

The way forward

As fully trained you can work for bricklaying companies and contractors or become independent with your own business. You can specialise in for example restoration tiling work or energy renovation and build further towards for example building technician or building constructor.
