Career paths: from apprentice to master and building constructor
Your journeyman certificate is the starting signal — here are the paths ahead in and out of the trade
Many think a vocational education is a dead end but the opposite is true. A journeyman's certificate in the wood trades is a solid foundation you can build a long and varied career on — either in the trade as a journeyman a foreman and master or further to a higher education. The overview of opportunities is worth having already while you are an apprentice.
§In the trade: journeyman, crew member, master
The most direct path is to work as a skilled carpenter in a carpentry, flooring or roofing company. With experience you can become a foreman and take responsibility for leading a crew and a construction site. If you want to go further, you can establish yourself as an independent master with your own business, where technical expertise is supplemented by knowledge of economics, estimation, management and customer contact.

§Further education: building constructor and more
With a journeyman's certificate and possibly a couple of years' experience you can study further. One of the most obvious paths is to become a building designer — a higher education where you learn to design draw and manage building projects. Other options are building technician building coordinator or going further towards engineer. The practical understanding from the trade is a great strength in these educations.
§Specialize yourself
You can also pursue a niche in the field. Restoration of listed buildings, energy renovation, passive house construction, covering of historic roofs or assembly of prefabricated timber elements are all areas where specialized knowledge is needed. Further training courses (AMU) keep competencies up to date and can provide certificates that open up new types of tasks.
