Noise, weather, heavy lifting and large machines — how you take care of yourself
The apron at an airport is an impressive — and demanding — place to work. There is engine noise jet blast large vehicles in motion weather in all forms and a constant schedule to keep. A good working environment is not a luxury here; it is what makes you able to stay in the trade for many years without wearing your body down or getting hurt.
§Noise — the invisible burden
Aircraft engines are extremely loud and even short time near a running plane can damage hearing without protection. Therefore hearing protection is standard equipment on the ramp. Hearing once damaged does not come back — so it's about using the protection consistently not just when it's loudest.
§Weather all year round
You work outdoors regardless of summer heat, rain, wind or frost. It places demands on your clothes and keeping you warm, dry and visible. Slippery forecourts, snow clearing and de-icing are part of winter, while heat and sun can wear in summer. Dressing correctly is part of the craft.
§Traffic and large machines
A forecourt is full of vehicles loading equipment conveyor belts and planes backing up and manoeuvring. Many airport accidents involve exactly this: someone is somewhere they should not be or a vehicle misses a person. High-visibility clothing fixed routes clear signs and full attention are therefore crucial. You learn to look for where it is safe to stand — and where it never is.
§Ergonomics — heavy lifting without wear.
Especially in luggage and cargo you will lift and move a lot. Suitcases and parcels of all sizes, day in and day out, take their toll on your back, shoulders and knees if you're not careful. That's why technique is more important than strength.

- 04Take breaks and alternate between tasks so the same joints are not stressed all day
- 05Speak up in time — a small pain that is ignored easily becomes a lasting injury
§Safety culture over individual rules
The most important thing on a ramp is not a single rule but a culture where everyone looks out for each other. You speak up when something is unsafe you stop if doubt arises and you report near-misses so they can be corrected before they become accidents. As new it's completely okay to ask — it's far better than guessing.
