The craft in action

Landscape gardener lays paving stones

The landscape gardener lays paving stones on mortar sand and leveling layer. A straightedge checks that the surface is level, the joint width is kept even, and each stone is driven tightly down with the rubber hammer. The slope indicator shows the surface's slope so rainwater runs away.

Soil preparation before planting

The landscape gardener prepares the ground: the solid, compact soil is dug up and mixed with compost so the upper humus becomes loose and humus-rich. To the left is the soil before, to the right is the loosened humus after mixing – a planting hole is dug and ready for the root ball.

Drain pipes are laid with fall

The landscape gardener lays the drain pipe in a filter gravel bed on a prepared base security layer and checks the slope with a level so water runs to the ditch. The levels mark high and low end – the actual slope in ‰ is calculated in the slope calculator.

Come home in the same state

Overview

As a gardener you work with plants, flowers, trees and green areas. You grow, plant, tend and care for everything green — in greenhouses, nurseries, parks and gardens. When you finish, you have an education certificate and are skilled in a trade where you work with living nature and see things grow under your hands.

What do you do in everyday life?

The everyday shifts with the seasons. You sow seeds, take cuttings, plant and care for plants as they grow, and you keep an eye on water, light, soil and pests. A gardener in a greenhouse may grow herbs or pot plants on a large scale, while a landscape gardener lays out gardens with paving, beds and lawns. You often work outdoors in all kinds of weather, use both hands and machines, and you learn to know the plants and their needs.

  • 01You learn to sow, plant, and care for plants so they thrive and grow healthy.
  • 02You become good at knowing plants, soil, fertiliser and growing conditions.
  • 03You work with machines and tools that belong to the green trades.
  • 04You learn to combat pests and diseases in a responsible way.
  • 05You work outdoors close to nature and with changing seasons year-round.
  • 06You get a trade where you see the result grow over time.

How do you get started?

You typically start with a basic course at a vocational school and then need an apprenticeship — for example in a plant nursery, a garden center, or with a landscape gardener. The education alternates between school stays and practice so you learn the theory and try it in the field and greenhouse. You get paid during training and learn the trade alongside experienced gardeners.

The way forward

With the education certificate you can work in nurseries, tree nurseries, parks, cemeteries or for landscape gardening companies. You can specialise, become a foreman or start your own company. The green agenda and the focus on sustainability make the trade more relevant than ever. If you want to go further, the education certificate can lead to further education in agriculture, environment and landscape.

“A gardener plants something today which first really unfolds in many years.”
