Density and weight

How much does the workpiece weigh? Enter the dimensions in millimetres and the material's density from the data sheet, and you get the weight.

The explanation is shown. Quick: one piece at a time. Advanced: number of pieces, your own cross-section area and the answer in other materials and quantities.

Density

Steel: DS/EN 1993-1-1 clause 3.2.6 (7,850 kg/m³) · aluminium: DS/EN 1999-1-1 clause 3.2.5 (2,700 kg/m³). Use your own material's data sheet when you have it.

Find it in the material's data sheet. Water is approx. 1 kg/dm³.

Answer

Mass

47.1kg

Volume per piece

6dm³

In grams

47,100g

How to work it out

  1. 1V = 1,000 · 2,000 · 3 mm³ = 6 dm³
  2. 2m = V · ρ = 6 dm³ · 7.85 kg/dm³ = 47.1 kgMeasurements in mm give mm³; divide by 1,000,000 to get dm³, which matches the density in kg/dm³.

The formula

ρ = m / V

Density is mass per volume.

kg/m = A [mm²] · ρ [kg/dm³] / 1.000

Weight per running metre from the cross-section — as in the steel merchant's weight tables.

1 kg/dm³ = 1 g/cm³ = 1.000 kg/m³

The same density in three units.

1 dm³ = 1.000.000 mm³

Measurements in mm must be divided by a million to become dm³.
