Two directions many possibilities: career in stone trade

Stonecutter, stone technician — and the way forward

Stonemasonry is both old and new. Classical stonecutting continues to thrive, while the newer stone technician trade has grown as natural stone such as granite and marble became popular in homes. As a qualified professional, you have several paths to choose from.

§The two directions

As a stonemason your strength lies in the artistic and the classical: figure carving inscriptions and decorations where handiwork and a good eye are crucial. As a stone technician the weight is in the workshop and industry: manufacturing and installing worktops wash basins and cooktops and working with a wide range of materials. The two directions share the fundamental material knowledge but point towards different tasks.

§Where can you work?

  • 01Stonemasonry shops and stone companies that make countertops, monuments, and decorations
  • 02Workshops that manufacture and install natural stone in kitchens and bathrooms
  • 03Companies with restoration and repair of stone work
  • 04With experience possibly as self-employed

§A trade with lasting value

Stone is a material that lasts for generations, and that gives the trade a special value. A well-executed stone work – a worktop, a monument, a decoration – can stand beautifully for many decades. Creating something that lasts is for many a large part of the satisfaction of working with stone.

§To develop

With experience you can become the one who masters the most difficult tasks who has a grip on the most demanding materials or who specialises in restoration or artistic carving. Material understanding and precision are something you can keep refining — and the most experienced stone workers are highly sought after precisely because of their deep knowledge.

Regardless of which direction and path you choose, you have learned a craft that unites the ancient and the modern. You understand stone, you can shape it with precision, and you can create something that lasts. It is a rare expertise to have with you.
