Why granite, marble, limestone and slate behave so differently

Why can you carve fine details in marble, but need diamond blades to cut granite? The answer lies in the geology. Stone is not just 'hard material' — the three major rock groups are formed in completely different ways, and it is precisely that difference that determines how the stone should be worked, split and finished.

Granite has solidified directly from cooled molten rock deep in the earth and typically consists of quartz, feldspar and mica. The coarse-grained, interlocked crystal structure makes granite one of the hardest and most wear-resistant types of natural stone — suitable for worktops, paving and facades that must last for generations, but also hard and demanding to split and cut.

§Metamorphic rocks: marble and slate

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone has been exposed over millions of years to high pressure and high temperature deep in the earth's crust. The process transforms the limestone's calcite into a denser often veined crystal structure. Marble is relatively soft and porous compared to granite which makes it easier to carve details into — but also more sensitive to acid scratches and stains.

Slate is a fine-grained rock formed by a lower degree of metamorphosis of shale. The characteristic layering — compressed layers of clay and minerals — makes slate relatively soft and easy to split into thin flat surfaces which historically made it popular for roofing and flooring.

§Sedimentary rock: limestone

Limestone is formed in warm, calm seas, often from remains of shells and skeletons of marine organisms that accumulate and are compressed over time. Limestone consists almost entirely of carbonate minerals such as calcite, which makes it relatively soft and easy to work with, but also more susceptible to acids and weathering than granite.

§The mineral groups behind the stone's behaviour

Broadly speaking, natural stone minerals can be divided into three groups: silicate minerals (as in granite and slate, always with silicon dioxide as a building block), oxides and carbonate minerals (as in limestone and marble). Silicate-bearing stones are generally harder and more wear-resistant, while carbonate-bearing stones are softer, easier to shape — and more vulnerable to acids, including common detergents. Knowing which group you are dealing with is the first step to treating the stone correctly.
