Installation and anchoring of natural stone

Facades, stairs, and slabs must sit safely for decades

The mounting itself is the moment when weeks or months of work cutting shaping and fine-polishing a stone is put into place — and it must happen safely and durably. A facade plate a stair stone or a worktop typically weighs a lot so the installation combines heavy lifting with a demand for millimetre precision.

§Rigging and lifting of heavy items

Before a stone plate or block can be moved, it must be rigged correctly — that is, the lifting device must be secured so the load hangs safely. This requires knowledge of load rules, SWL marking (Safe Working Load) and rejection limits for rigging equipment, and an assessment of where the load's center of gravity is. If the center of gravity is incorrectly assessed, the piece can tip or slip during lifting.

§Mortar and adhesives

With installation of steps stairs and facade elements the stone is often bonded with mortar. The choice of mortar type and binder depends on the task — some mortars are designed for a quick thin layer while others should fill larger joints completely without air pockets so water cannot penetrate and freeze in the structure in winter. Even and complete filling of the joint is crucial for durability.

§Mechanical anchoring of facades

Large facade formats and heavy natural stone panels cannot always be carried by adhesive alone. Here, mechanical anchoring systems are used, where the panel is held by hidden brackets, dowels or anchors. Requirements for natural stone panels used externally and internally as cladding are collected in the standard DS/EN 1469, which among other things specifies requirements for the panel's thickness and properties. With mechanical anchoring, anchor holes are typically drilled in the stone, which are filled with mortar before the panel is pressed into place against the previous one.

§Staircases and floors in natural stone

Setting up stairs in natural stone places special demands: each step must be firmly and level, the edges must be uniform, and the surface must often have a dressing degree or finish that provides good footing. The anchoring in the subfloor must be able to bear the daily stress from feet for many years without the steps loosening or tipping.

§Joint repair and maintenance

Natural stone lasts for generations but joints and mortar wear and may require repair along the way — for example if frost has caused the mortar to crack or if a slab has shifted. Being able to perform neat and durable joint repair is part of the daily craft, whether the task is new installation or maintenance of older stone work.
