Digital stonework: CNC 3D drawing and documentation
When modern technology meets an ancient trade
Stonemasonry is one of the oldest crafts, but today it is practiced alongside advanced digital technology. From drawing to processing to documentation, both stonecutters and stone technicians use digital tools that supplement — but do not replace — manual craftsmanship.
§From freehand sketch to digital drawing
The education emphasizes both freehand drawing and sketching for problem-solving of details and digital drawing programs for executing and documenting a work task. The freehand sketch is still the way to quickly test an idea, while digital drawing is used for precise work drawings with elevation, plan, side view, and signatures, which can be shared with customers, colleagues, and machines.
§3D drawing and digital construction
3D drawing is used to visualise and plan complex items before stone is cut, and is part of the broader concept 'digital construction', where drawings, measurements and documentation are shared digitally between the parties involved in the building. The ability to communicate digitally at work has therefore become part of the modern stonemason's and stonetech's toolkit, on equal footing with chisel and angle grinder.
§CNC processing of stone
CNC-controlled machines — computer-controlled cutting and machining centres — can cut, mill, grind and polish natural stone, composite stone and other stone materials with great precision including complex 3D shapes. The machines can be part of automated production cells in modern stone workshops which increases capacity especially for repeated industrial tasks such as worktops and tiles.

§Digital registration and quality control
Digital registration — for example photo documentation with different camera types and digital image processing — is used to document a task's execution and quality before during and after work. IT equipment is also used for planning and systematic quality control and maintenance so both the customer and the company have a clear picture of what has been delivered.
§The limits of the machine
Regardless of how advanced the equipment becomes, it cannot replace the judgement that comes from reading a stone, seeing its veins and understanding how best to treat it. Digital technology is a powerful tool for precision, documentation and efficiency — but the heart of the trade is still the craftsman's understanding of the material.
