One of the big advantages of a vocational education is that you earn money while you learn. From the day you enter a training contract with a company, you receive apprentice pay – even during the periods when you are at school.
§The apprentice wages increase through the program
The apprentice wages are not fixed all the way through. It is built up in steps so it increases as you move forward in the education and become more experienced and independent. You start on the lowest rate at the beginning and end on a higher rate in the last years of the program.
§What is a collective agreement?
A collective agreement is an agreement between employers and employees that sets salary and working conditions in an area. For the fitter trade in industry it's typically the Industry Agreement that is negotiated between the employers' side and trade unions. It determines both the apprentice wage tier and a number of other conditions such as allowances pension and working hours.
It is the company that pays you a trainee wage according to the collective agreement throughout the agreement period. A scheme called the Employers' Education Contribution (AUB) reimburses the employer for the time you are at school.

§Terms as fully trained
When you have the journeyman's certificate you go from apprentice wages to skilled wages. As a skilled ship assembler you're covered by collective agreements that apply at your workplace giving you agreed terms for wages working hours supplements for inconvenient hours pension and notice. Many ship assemblers work in the maritime industry where tasks away at vessels and travel days can trigger special supplements.
