Patina and surface finishing: from verdigris to blued
To control the metal's colour and protect the surface
The colour of metals is not static. A polished copper roof darkens to brown over years and ends after decades as the characteristic blue-green patina seen on church roofs and domes. For the metalsmith, patina is something you have to deal with and a deliberate tool: the colour can be induced, controlled and stopped so a new workpiece can look old or an old one can keep its appearance.
§Natural patina
Patina is the layer of oxides and salts that forms when the metal surface reacts with oxygen, moisture and pollution in the air. On copper it develops from shiny via brown and almost black to green verdigris — a process that takes many years in the open air. Patina is not only cosmetic: it protects the underlying metal from further corrosion and is the reason copper roofs can last for centuries. In building conservation it is deliberately pursued and preserved.
§Artificial patining and browning
The metal worker can speed up and control the colour with patinating chemicals. Case hardening gives steel and brass a dark, brown-black surface; sulphur-bearing baths blacken silver and copper; copper-bearing baths can create green and blue tones. The colour is often brought out on a clean, lightly heated surface and fixed when the desired shade is reached. Because many patinating solutions are corrosive or toxic, the work requires gloves, eye protection and exhaust.

§To protect the surface
A polished brass or copper surface tarnishes quickly if not protected. For indoor items, a clear lacquer or wax is often applied to seal out the air and preserve the shine. For functional items that must withstand handling, a durable clear lacquer is chosen; for decorative items, a microcrystalline wax may suffice. The protective layer must be applied to a completely clean, degreased surface, otherwise fingerprints and marks become trapped under the coating.
