The warehouse's history: from grain store to automatic high-rise warehouse
How storage, handling and logistics developed over time
Storing goods is one of mankind's oldest tasks. Already in the earliest urban societies, grain stores were built to save the harvest for winter and lean years. But the modern warehouse — with shelves, forklifts, barcodes and a flow from ramp to shelf — only came about in the last century. Warehouse work as an independent trade is even younger.
§The warehouse and the merchant: the age of hand power
In hundreds of years, a warehouse was a storehouse: a tall building, often by the harbour or marketplace, where goods were stacked in sacks, barrels, boxes and bales. Everything was carried in and out on backs, rolled on carts or hoisted up with a pulley and an external hoisting frame on the facade — the old storehouses in harbour towns still have their hoisting booms. The overview lay in the merchant's head and in handwritten warehouse books. If a good was placed wrongly, or if someone wrote wrongly in the book, it was in practice lost.
The work was purely physical: carrying, stacking and counting. There was no 'warehouse worker' in the modern sense with systems and certificates — there were workmen who lifted. Back and joint injuries were common because there were no aids beyond hand carts and manual labor.
§The forklift and pallet — two inventions that changed everything
Two inventions in early 1900s created the modern warehouse. First was motorized lift truck. In 1917 American company Clark built its 'Tructractor' — at first just to move materials in their own factory. When visitors saw it and wanted to buy it Clark went into production. In 1923 Yale built an electric truck with both forks and mast that could lift high — thus the machine we today call a forklift
The other invention was the pallet. It really had its breakthrough during World War II, when the American military sought a way to load supplies much faster. The solution was a wooden board that goods could be stacked on and a truck could lift underneath. The pallet and the forklift fit together like hand in glove: together they made it possible to move heavy unit loads in seconds, where it previously took men a long time to carry.
§Standardization: when everyone uses the same measure
A pallet is only useful if trucks shelves and trucks fit it. That's why standardization of pallet dimensions began after the war. In the US formats were set in cooperation between industry organizations and in Europe the EUR pallet (1200 × 800 mm) came in the early 1960s connected to the railways. Standardization is an invisible but crucial part of logistics history: when everyone uses the same dimensions goods can flow smoothly from factory through warehouse and truck to customer.
§The container and the terminal
The next major shift happened in transportation and spread directly into the warehouse. In 1956 American truck driver Malcom McLean first sailed standardized steel containers with a ship. What previously took dock workers days to load piece by piece could now be handled in hours. The container created the terminal — the hub where goods are transferred between ship train and truck — and introduced the idea of cross-docking: sending goods on without storing them. Terminal work as you know it today is a direct child of the container.
§The barcode and digital inventory
As long as the warehouse was controlled with handwritten books, mistakes were inevitable. The solution was the barcode. The idea was patented back in the early 1950s but it wasn't until 1974 that a barcode (a pack of chewing gum) was first scanned in an American store. The UPC barcode system and the European EAN made it possible to identify each product by machine. In the warehouse it meant that every movement — receiving, placement, picking, dispatch — could be registered with a scanner and update inventory immediately. The warehouse management system (WMS) replaced the warehouse ledger.

§Automation and Today's Warehouse
E-commerce from the 1990s onwards placed entirely new demands: many small orders, fast delivery and high accuracy. This drove the development of pick-to-light and voice-controlled picking, RFID tags that can be read without direct line of sight, and eventually fully automated high-bay storage where cranes and robots retrieve goods without people. Still, the warehouse worker is far from redundant: someone must control, inspect, handle deviations and ensure that data and reality match.
