How office work became modern administration

Office education with specialties typically lasts about four years and gives you a trade found in almost all industries. Whether a company makes cars or helps citizens, it needs someone to keep track of the papers, numbers and agreements. That is your trade.

§The typewriter era

In the old days the office was filled with typewriters, card files and large binders. Letters were written by hand or machine, copied with carbon paper and archived physically. A good office was a tidy office where you could quickly find the right case.

§The computer changes everything

With the computer the typewriter disappeared and the archives moved onto the screen. Word processing spreadsheets and email made work faster but also more complex. Today you are expected to know several systems collaborate digitally and keep track of many tasks at once.

§The modern administrator

Today the office education is divided into specializations — administration public administration economy law secretary tax and freight and shipping. Common to them all is that you are the one who makes things flow: you coordinate document communicate and keep track of the details.
