Sustainability and recycling in the body shop trade

From source separation at the workshop to EU rules for end-of-life vehicles

Bodywork is not just about repairing the individual car — it is also about what happens to the materials when a car is eventually scrapped. The regulations for the bodywork technician course require that the student can work environmentally consciously in accordance with sustainable development principles, apply knowledge of recycling and waste separation, and account for technological developments that reduce environmental impact.

§The ELV directive and producer responsibility

The EU's End-of-Life Vehicles Directive (ELV) imposes a producer responsibility on producers and importers: car owners must be able to deliver an end-of-life vehicle for environmentally sound treatment at no cost. In Denmark, the scheme is administered in practice through producer responsibility rules, which the Danish Environmental Protection Agency supervises. The aim is to ensure that metal, plastic, and glass are recycled, while usable parts can be sold on as used parts for exactly the type of repairs the auto body technician performs every day.

§EU tightens the requirements further

I december 2025 nåede EU's Råd og Europa-Parlamentet til enighed om en opdatering af reglerne for udtjente køretøjer, der skal gøre det lettere at reparere biler og sikre bedre udnyttelse af materialer og kritiske råstoffer. For karrosseriteknikeren betyder det i praksis, at nye bilmodeller i stigende grad designes, så de kan skilles ad, repareres og genanvendes lettere — en udvikling, der direkte påvirker, hvordan fremtidens karrosserireparationer kommer til at foregå.

A car body workshop produces several types of waste that must be kept separate: hazardous waste such as spray cans solvents and oil residues ordinary metal scrap from replaced parts and grinding dust and paint waste from surface treatment. The waste regulations' requirement for source separation also applies here and failure to separate hazardous waste from ordinary waste can be both an environmental offence and an unnecessary expense when the waste is later to be handled properly.

§VOC reduction is related to the environment not just health

The transition to paint products with lower volatile organic compound (VOC) content is primarily known as a workplace improvement, but it also has an environmental side: less solvent emissions to the air. The two considerations — employee health and the external environment — thus point in the same direction when the workshop chooses paint technology and extraction solutions.
