Lean, 5S, and continuous improvements on the floor
How to delegate and check that the work is done right
Beyond operating and monitoring the installation, the regulation requires that you can select and apply improvement tools in productivity-enhancing activities, and later in your education that you can select problem-solving tools from different production management philosophies to improve production methods. The most common of these tools come from Lean thinking, and they are far more practical than they sound.
§Lean thinking in brief
Lean is fundamentally about eliminating waste — everything that costs time, material, or space without creating value for the person who ultimately receives the item. Waiting time, unnecessary transports, overproduction, errors that need to be fixed, and poorly organized workplaces are all examples of waste. Lean is not one specific machine or one system — it is a way of looking at your own work, and the concrete tools, such as 5S and Kaizen, are the tools for translating that mindset into action.
§5S — from chaos to system
- 01Sort – remove what is not used from the work area
- 02Put in system — give everything that gets left behind a fixed, logical place
- 03Sparkling clean — clean thoroughly, and use the cleaning to discover wear and leaks
- 04Standardize – describe how the station should look so everyone can see a deviation immediately
- 05Self-discipline (ensuring continuous improvement) — make the first four steps a fixed habit not a one-off clear-up
5S is typically used directly in production environments where tools, materials and documents are visible, and where waste becomes obvious as soon as something is not in its fixed place. A well-run 5S workplace is neither tidier for tidiness' sake nor an extra work burden — it makes it faster to find the right tool, easier to spot a leak, and safer to move around because floors and aisles are kept clear.
§Kaizen – the small improvements
Kaizen means continuous improvement in many small steps rather than large, rare upheavals. The idea is that the person closest to the work – often the operator themselves – sees the small annoyances and waste that a manager would never notice from an office. Therefore Kaizen is based on improvement suggestions coming from below, being taken seriously and being tested on a small scale before they possibly spread to the whole line or company.
§PDCA — the circle behind improvement
PDCA — Plan, Do, Check, Act — is the systematic method many improvements are tested by: you plan a change, test it on a small scale, check if it actually works, and act accordingly by either making the change permanent, adjusting it, or discarding it. The circle ensures that improvements are based on experience rather than guesswork, and that you don't change an entire production line based on a single good day.

§Operator's role in improvement work
You are the one closest to the process hour after hour, and therefore also the one best positioned to see where waste really lies. Many companies involve operators directly in improvement work through huddle meetings, improvement boards, or dedicated suggestion boxes. Contributing an observation or an idea is not a side task alongside the real work — it is part of what the trade today calls productivity-enhancing activities.
