The industry today — jobs, demand and future

Where industrial operators work, and why they continue to be important

The industrial operator is one of the skilled workers who keeps Danish production running. What you find on the shelves — food, medicine, electronics, plastic and much more — has come out of factories where someone has to run, monitor and look after the machines. Here we look at where those people work and why the need does not disappear.

§Where does an industrial operator work?

The craft exists across industries, and that's one of its strengths: you're not tied to one type of factory. Many work in food and pharmaceutical industry, but electronics, plastics, chemicals, and textile production also employ industrial operators.

  • 01Food industry — production and packaging of food and drink
  • 02Pharmaceutical and biotech industry — production under strict quality requirements
  • 03Electronics, plastics and chemical production
  • 04Other process industry where goods are manufactured on lines and systems

§Automation changes the job — but does not remove it

Production is becoming increasingly automated, and some fear that operators will disappear. In practice the opposite happens: the more automatic the system is, the more important it is that someone understands it, can set it up correctly and intervene when something goes wrong. Your job shifts from doing things by hand to controlling, monitoring and troubleshooting — but it does not disappear.

§The green transition and new productions

New industries are emerging in Denmark – from large-scale pharmaceutical production to facilities linked to green energy. This creates a need for operators who can run modern facilities and work with more sustainable production methods. The specialization in productivity where you work with, among other things, Lean and continuous improvements points directly to what many companies will seek.

§A broad entry ticket into the industry

Because the trade is broad and found in many industries, your journeyman certificate gives you many doors to enter. Want you later to switch from food to medicinal or from plastic to electronics, you take your basic competencies with you. This makes industrial operator a flexible choice in a changing job market.

The more automatic a factory becomes, the more it means there is someone who really understands the plant.
