Thatch, compaction and the mechanical methods that keep the growth layer healthy
A green can look perfect on the surface and at the same time be suffocating underneath. The two hidden enemies are called thatch and compaction — and the mechanical care methods that combat them take up considerable weight in the training: vertical cutting aeration by spiking and deep aeration grass renovation and topdressing are all independent learning objectives in the classroom subject Grass Care.
§Thatch — the organic layer that speaks up
Thatch is the layer of dead and half-decomposed organic material — stems, runners and roots — that accumulates between the grass blades and the growth layer itself. A thin layer is normal and provides some cushioning, but if the thatch becomes too thick, it holds water on top, cuts off air from below and becomes a greenhouse for fungal diseases. A thatchy green is soft, slow and vulnerable — and the ball leaves deep impact marks.
§Compression — when soil loses its pores
Thousands of footsteps and machine wheels compress the soil's pores over time so both water and air have difficulty penetrating. Roots become short and shallow, water backs up and grass paradoxically thirsts in the middle of moisture. The solution is to open the soil mechanically — and this is where aeration equipment comes in.
- 01Pricking: thin, hard pins are inserted into the surface — mild aeration that barely disturbs the finish.
- 02Hollow aeration: hollow spikes pull pegs of soil and felt up — removes material and creates channels for air, water, and new sand.
- 03Deep aeration: long spikes break down to 20 cm depth or more and loosen the deeper, compressed layers.
- 04Vertical cutting: vertical knives cut down into the carpet, tear up felt and encourage grass to grow more densely.
- 05Grass renovation: the combination of vigorous aeration, overseeding and topdressing when an area needs restoration.
§Topdressing — sand that builds surface
Topdressing is laying out thin layer sand or sand mixture that is dragged down into grass mat. On greens typically done lightly and often through growing season: sand thins thatch evens small unevenness and builds firmer more even surface — often in interplay with aeration where sand fills channels and improves growth layer inside

§Plan after measurement — and after the game
The vigorous methods cost playing quality in the days after so timing must balance agronomy and calendar: major aeration is done outside the major tournaments and the grass must be growing so it heals quickly. The decision basis is measurements — soil profiles moisture measurements filter thickness and firmness — exactly as the competency objective of using measurement tools to analyze the course's playing quality and the grass's growing conditions prescribes. A maintenance plan that can document why is also easier to defend to impatient players.
