This study guide helps you understand the actual training path to electrician — how the program is structured how you get in what awaits along the way and what you can build on afterwards. The technical subject matter (calculators standards and articles) you find under the trade's own pages; here it is about the path through the education. Electrician is a vocational education (EUD) and at HANSENBERG it is offered in Kolding.

§How you diagnose problems — systematically

Like most vocational apprenticeships the electrician apprenticeship alternates between school and practice at an apprenticeship. It consists of a basic course (divided into two) followed by a main course. In total the apprenticeship typically lasts around 4½ to 5 years depending on your background and your course.

Basic course 1 is broad and is about trying out the trade and finding out if the electrician trade is for you. Basic course 2 is aimed at the electrician trade. The main course takes place primarily at the apprenticeship, where you periodically return to school for theoretical school periods.

§Alternation between school and apprenticeship

After passing basic course 2 you must have an apprenticeship before you can begin the main course. At the apprenticeship you learn the trade in practice together with experienced craftsmen, while school periods give you the theory and specialized professional modules. It is this alternation that makes you use both your hands and your mind — and that you earn pay during most of your training.

§Access and admission

The way in depends on where you come from. If you come directly from 9th or 10th grade (or at most two years later) you typically start basic course 1. If more than two years have passed or you have already taken GF1 you apply for basic course 2.

• 01Passed primary school exit exam.
• 02Grade requirements: at least 02 on average in both Danish and mathematics. If you do not meet the requirement, admission can take place through an entrance test and interview.
• 03Application occurs via optagelse.dk. Pay attention to application deadlines (typically March 1 for school start after summer vacation).

§EUX—journeyman certificate and higher education diploma

If you want both to be skilled and have access to higher educations, you can choose EUX. Here you take academic subjects on top of your professional education and end up with both a journeyman certificate and a study competence-giving exam. EUX extends the course but provides direct access to higher educations afterward.

§Specialties and journeyman's exam

In the main course you train in one of the electrician trade's two specialties, which determines your profile:

• 01Electrician 1 — with emphasis on installation, e.g. in homes and smaller buildings.
• 02Electrician 2 — broader and more development-oriented, e.g. installation in larger buildings and industry.

§What can you build further on?

Your journeyman certificate is not necessarily the final station. With an electrician background, you can, among other things, further educate yourself as:

• 01Electrical installer (academy degree approximately 2 years) which gives access to take the licensing exam.
• 02Automation Technologist or Energy Technologist (Business Academy Educations).
• 03Machine master or engineer — typically via EUX or other qualifying background.

§Good study tips

• 01Be strong in mathematics and physics — they are central in the trade and facilitate both school periods and journeyman's exam.
• 02Start looking for an apprenticeship early; it is a competition and an agreement makes admission and the course much more secure.
• 03Use the school periods actively to point towards the electrician profile you want.
• 04Keep track of practical things like work clothes, tool list and safety from day one on the apprenticeship.
