The industry today — workplaces, job opportunities and future
Where digital media graduates work, and what drives demand
If you look around on an ordinary day, you are surrounded by what the subject produces: websites you visit, apps you use, videos in your feed, animations in an advertisement, 3D visualizations of a product you are considering buying. All of that needs to be built by someone — and that is the world you work in as a digital media graduate.
§Where do you work?
The craft is broad, and that's one of its strengths. Where you end up depends greatly on which specialty you chose and what draws you.
- 01Advertising and communications agencies producing campaigns and content.
- 02Media and production companies with film, video and animation.
- 03IT and web companies that build websites, apps and e-commerce.
- 04Game companies and studios that work with 3D, graphics, and interaction.
- 05Internal media and marketing departments in larger companies.
- 06As self-employed or freelancer solving tasks for multiple customers.
§What drives demand?
The need for people who can produce digital content is linked to a long-term trend: increasingly, companies' communication, sales and marketing take place digitally. This creates an ongoing need for people who understand both the visual and creative and the technical craftsmanship behind it – whether it's video, web or 3D.
§AI, automation and new tools
The craft is in rapid change. New tools, including generative AI, can now do parts of what previously took many hours of work — from images and text to drafts to animations. It doesn't change the need for skill; it moves it. You need increasingly to be able to control the tools, assess quality, secure rights, and put it all together into something that works and makes sense for the customer.
§What does it mean for you?
For you as a prospective digital media graduate it means the trade is not standing still. You should expect to continuously learn new tools and techniques. It can sound demanding but it is also what keeps the trade alive – and what makes the one who becomes broad and keeps learning rarely short of tasks.
