The farrier's history: three thousand years of iron under the hoof

From the Romans' hipposandals to modern, veterinary-supported shoeing

As long as humans have used horses for pulling power transport and war hoof wear has been a problem. A lame horse was in olden days a disaster — it couldn't pull the plough carry the rider or transport goods. That's why the farrier trade arose from a very practical necessity: to protect the hoof's wearing surface so the horse could work. The trade has one foot in the blacksmith's craft and the other in horse knowledge and that's how it's always been.

§Before the iron shoe: early hoof protection

§The nailed iron shoe

The decisive breakthrough was the idea of nailing the shoe to the insensitive hoof wall. The nailed metal shoe gained ground in the early Middle Ages and throughout the Middle Ages the iron horseshoe gradually became common throughout Europe as iron became more accessible. With a nailed-on shoe the horse could work on any surface and the hoof's sliding surface was protected — a small piece of technology that had enormous significance for agriculture transport and warfare.

In the following centuries the shoe was refined: forged in iron shaped to the hoof and fitted with nail holes. The hot shoe — where the shoe is heated and shaped so it fits exactly to the hoof — won through in the early modern period and became a widespread technique. The very term for the one who shoed horses as a specialty was established in this period.

§How the key players work together to solve a patient's problems

In guild times and long after, horseshoeing was part of common blacksmith work. The village smith was often also a horseshoe smith — he forged the shoes himself at the forge, shaped them on the anvil and nailed them on. The work happened with hand and eye: the hoof was assessed by sight, the shoe forged in a suitable size and fitted by holding it hot against the hoof. The tools were the smith's classic equipment supplemented with hoof knife, rasp, clinching tongs and nail punch.

Knowledge was passed from master to apprentice. There were no textbooks in hoof anatomy for the ordinary village blacksmith — he learned by watching, experimenting and listening to the older journeymen. The understanding of the hoof's sensitive interior, the white line and safe nail placement was largely tacit, practical knowledge that lived in the hands.

No hoof no horse. The old proverb caught a hard truth: a horse was only worth as much as the four hooves it stood on — and the blacksmith had them in his hands.

§Industrialisation and the horse's golden age

It may sound paradoxical, but industrialization in the 1800s was in many ways the horse's — and thus the blacksmith's — golden age. Cities grew, and all transport of goods, people and materials in the city was done with horses. Armies depended on horses. The need for skilled blacksmiths was enormous, and factories began to mass-produce horseshoes in standard sizes, which the blacksmith then adapted to each individual hoof — the forerunner of today's cold shoeing with factory-made shoes.

§When the motor replaced the horse

In the course of the 1900s, the big shift happened: the car, tractor and lorry took over the work the horse had done, and armies became motorised. The working horse almost disappeared from farming and transport, and the need for farriers fell dramatically. Many thought the trade would die out. But the horse survived in a new role — as a sport, breeding and leisure animal — and with it the farrier also survived.

§The modern trade

The modern farrier works largely with riding, jumping and trotting horses, where demands on hoof balance and horse health are high. The trade has moved from silent empirical knowledge towards a solid foundation in hoof anatomy, biomechanics and veterinary understanding. Therapeutic shoeing, where special shoes support the treatment of hoof disease, happens in close collaboration with the veterinarian — a division of labour the medieval smith never knew.

Materials and methods have also evolved: beyond the classical steel shoes shoes in other materials glued fittings inlays and pads are used. Documentation and follow-up from visit to visit has become part of good practice. But the essence the anvil and the hammer are still there — and the fundamental truth that a well-balanced hoof carries the whole horse has not changed in three thousand years.
