Auto painting is not just about being able to apply a beautiful coating — it's also about having your papers in order. The products you work with contain chemicals that can be harmful to health if handled incorrectly. Therefore, the trade is regulated, and part of what you gain through your education is proof that you may and can work safely with the substances.

Many of the products an auto painter uses — for example two-part paints, fillers and hardeners — contain isocyanates and may contain epoxy. The Work Authority sets requirements to have completed special training before you may work with these substances. The requirement applies regardless of whether you are employed, an employer or self-employed — there are no exceptions.
§Tightened requirements when there is increased risk
There is an additional stricter course for those who perform or supervise work with isocyanates under conditions of increased risk of exposure — for example through inhalation or skin contact. Spray application outside closed systems spray cabins and spray boxes are among the situations that can trigger the need for supplementary training. That is precisely the kind of work often done in a paint shop so it is worth knowing the rule.
§Safety data sheets and labelling
Each product comes with a safety data sheet that tells what it contains, what hazards are present, and how you protect yourself. Being able to read and use these sheets is part of your professionalism. The products are also marked with hazard symbols and instructions you must be able to interpret and act on.

§Who sets the framework for the field?
The education's content and goals are set out in a regulation and education order which are drawn up by the professional committee for the area together with the authorities. The professional committee is composed of employer and employee organisations from the industry and helps ensure the education matches what the trade actually requires.
