Isocyanate training structure: basic training, supervision and refresher

Who should be trained, how long does it take, and when should it be renewed

Introduction

The requirement for training to work with isocyanates is not just 'a course you take once'. The rules distinguish between who needs to be trained, how extensive the training should be, and how often it should be renewed — and they have been tightened several times in recent years.

Basic training: 2 days for anyone who works with or supervises

The basic training is a 2-day course (AMU 47942) for everyone who works with or supervises isocyanate products. The course covers the health hazards, how the work is planned and how protective equipment and ventilation are used correctly, and it ends with a training certificate that must be shown as documentation.

Inspector is covered equally with performer

Since 15 April 2023 it is no longer only those who handle the products themselves who need the certificate: the person who supervises the isocyanate work must also have completed the training. It is the same training and the same certificate as for the person doing the work (AMU 47942) — there is no separate supervisor training. If the work involves increased risk, the supervisor must also have the supplementary course. The reason is that a supervisor who does not know the hazards and the right working methods in detail cannot spot and correct errors before they have consequences.

Supplementary Course with Increased Exposure Risk

There is also a supplementary 1-day course (AMU 21204), required for isocyanate work with increased risk of exposure: handling of articles that are not fully cured, casting, open handling above 45 °C, spraying outside closed systems, spray booths and spray cabins, and high-energy spraying. The requirement has applied since 24 August 2023, both for the person doing and the person supervising the work.

Refresher every 5 years

Training is not something you do once and for all. People covered by the isocyanate training requirement must renew it at least every 5 years. Industriens Uddannelser expects the first separate renewal courses to be offered in Q2 2027, but the requirement to renew already applies. If you have a certificate under the old rules (from before 15 April 2023), it remains valid for work without increased risk, but it must be renewed by 24 August 2028 at the latest — no matter how old the original training is.

Why the requirements have been tightened gradually

The tightenings are because isocyanates are among the substances most likely to lead to work-related asthma and allergies, and the consequences can be permanent. By expanding the requirement to also include supervisory staff and introducing a fixed refresher cycle, the rules ensure that knowledge of the dangers and safe working methods does not gradually disappear while you are in the profession.

“A degree that is ten years old and never refreshed says more about when you learned it than what you remember of it today.”
