This study guide helps you understand the actual training path to bus driver license (category D) as an AMU course at AMU SYD. It is not about the technical bus driving subject matter — you find that in the trade's articles and tools — but about how the course is structured what is required to get in which certificate you end up with the economics behind it and how you sign up. Note that specific prices class sizes and dates can vary from class to class; always check the current class at the school before you plan.

§What is the course, and what does it lead to?

A driving license for bus (category D) is a license for a large bus that, together with a commercial certificate, gives the right to professional bus driving and passenger transportation. At AMU SYD it's typically obtained through the AMU course "Passenger Transportation with Bus", where you're trained both in the license itself and in the mandatory driver training required for commercial operation. The target group is people who want to work as a driver with a large bus — in public transport, on tourist routes or in private transportation.

§Access and admission

To participate in the course you must as a rule meet these requirements (as they appear on AMU SYD's own course page):

• 01You must be at least 21 years old. Note: the normal age limit for a large bus driving license is 24 years, but you can obtain it from 21 years (in some cases 18 years) when it occurs as part of a qualification education — exactly like this course.
• 02You must have a valid standard driving license for cars (category B).
• 03You must have an approved medical certificate for bus.
• 04You must master Danish at the level of 'Danish Test 2'.
• 05Previous convictions are included in the Road Directorate's assessment of whether you can get a professional driving licence.

§Duration and structure

The course is a course programme (not an alternating vocational education with an apprenticeship), but it combines several parts: the driving licence part and the mandatory qualification training. The total length depends especially on your age.

The statutory qualification part can according to the Road Directorate be taken either as a basic qualification test (theory + practical) or as an intensive basic qualification course of 4 weeks (140 hours) with at least 10 individual driving lessons. AMU SYD reports that you can supplement with a BAB course (typically 5 days) if you also want to drive flexible traffic and/or patient transport.

§What certificate do you get?

Upon completion of the course you obtain driving licence in category D-EP according to current requirements for large bus drivers, as well as the EU qualification certificate which entitles you to professional passenger transport. The EU certificate is not permanent: it must be maintained with mandatory EU further training which for bus drivers must be carried out at least every 5 years.

§AMU economics: participant fees and continuing education funding

As an AMU course the price depends on your situation — especially whether you are in work and whether you are counted as highly educated. AMU SYD states on their course page the following price examples (but always check the current course as some have surcharges):

Når du deltager i erhvervsrettet efteruddannelse for voksne, kan du søge VEU-godtgørelse, der kompenserer for tabt arbejdsfortjeneste. VEU-godtgørelsen svarer til dagpengesatsen og udgør i 2026 ca. 5.086,39 kr. pr. uge (ca. 137 kr. pr. time). Du skal være i beskæftigelse som lønmodtager eller selvstændig for at kunne få den. Du kan desuden søge befordringstilskud, der i 2026 ydes med 1,14 kr. pr. km efter de første 24 km pr. dag (op til maks. 576 km pr. dag). §How to register

You register directly with AMU SYD via their website, by phone 76 37 37 37, or at info@amusyd.dk. When you're registered for an AMU class, you apply for VEU compensation and possibly travel allowance when registering. Make sure to have a medical certificate, Danish language level, and category B driving license in place well in advance, as these are requirements to start.

§Good study tips

• 01Get the medical certificate for bus in order early — it is a hard entry requirement and can take time to book.
• 02Clarify your age situation: if you are under 23, the course may be longer, so plan accordingly.
• 03Check specific course price and duration at the school before calculating cost — figures vary
• 04Consider from the start whether you need BAB allowance (flex traffic/patient transport) so it can be included in the course.
• 05Remember now that the EU certificate must be maintained with further training at least every 5 years to retain your right to professional driving.
