Study guidance: First aid and fire

First aid and firefighting are practical subjects that must be in your body. Theory gives understanding, but it is repetition and practical exercise in the course that enables you to act calmly when it matters. Read therefore with the goal of being able to act — not just knowing.

You must be able to do this

  • 01Recognise cardiac arrest and act according to the chain of survival.
  • 02Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and operate an automated external defibrillator.
  • 03Follow first aid's four main points in the right order
  • 04Place an unconscious person in locked recovery position and stop heavy bleeding
  • 05Provide a clear calm alarm call to 1-1-2
  • 06Know the fire triangle, fire classes and choose the right extinguishing agent

Important concepts

  • 01Survival chain
  • 02CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
  • 03AED (automated external defibrillator)
  • 04Clear airways and locked side bearings
  • 05Main points of first aid
  • 06The fire triangle and fire classes
  • 07Evacuation and emergency exits

Good habits and preparation

Note where defibrillators, fire extinguishers, fire blankets and escape routes are located where you move around daily — it saves precious seconds. Practise the procedures until they become automatic, and participate actively in the practical training on the course. Repeat at regular intervals, as skills otherwise fade.

Where can you read more

Use the school's course material and official guidance on first aid and basic firefighting. Organisations such as Danish First Aid Council, Red Cross and rescue services publish material on first aid and fire. Be aware that specific techniques and ratios are continuously updated, so always follow the latest guidance from your course.
