Daily floor washing with a damp mop

Two buckets, the right moisture and a fixed pattern

Damp mopping is the standard method for daily floor cleaning. The guide shows the whole process: choosing the agent according to floor type, the two-bucket system that keeps clean and dirty water separate, the right level of dampness and a systematic pattern so the floor gets clean without streaks.

  1. Choose the product according to floor type

Typically use a neutral product (pH 6–9) for daily maintenance. Check the floor's acid sensitivity first: natural stone, marble and limestone must not come into contact with acidic products. Linoleum and wood often require a neutral product and limited water. Follow the floor and product data sheets.

  2. Set up the two-bucket system

Use two buckets (or a double-bucket system with a wringer): one with clean working solution and one for the dirty water. That way you never wash the floor with dirty water, and the working solution stays clean longer. Colour-code the buckets by zone.

One bucket clean, one bucket dirty — always wring out into the dirty one.

  3. Remove loose dirt first

Sweep or dry-mop the floor with a dry microfibre mop to remove hair, dust and loose particles. If you wet-clean over loose dirt, you create mud and streaks. Dry before damp — on floors too.

  4. Dampen the mop correctly

The mop must be damp, not dripping wet — it must not leave puddles that dry slowly and leave streaks. Wring out excess water in the press. Microfibre loosens dirt mechanically, so you can manage with less water.

  5. Wash in a fixed, overlapping pattern

Mop in an even S or figure-of-eight pattern, where each stroke slightly overlaps the previous one, so the whole floor is covered without gaps. Work backwards towards the exit, so you do not step on the freshly washed floor.

Wash your way out of the room — not into a corner.

  6. Change mop head and water often

Turn or change the mop when it is dirty, and change the solution when the water becomes cloudy. A dirty mop and cloudy water simply smear the dirt out in a thin layer over the whole floor.

  7. Inspect and leave to dry

Check the floor for spots and streaks against the light, and correct small faults with a clean damp mop face. If needed, mark the wet floor with a sign so no one slips while it dries.
