Installing an earthed socket outlet
Danish earthed socket — correct polarity and PE
A socket outlet looks simple, but reversed polarity or a forgotten protective conductor makes it dangerous. This guide covers fitting a Danish earthed outlet with correct connection and testing.
Make the circuit dead
Switch off the circuit, secure it against reconnection and verify that it is dead with a voltage tester before you open the box. Follow the five safety rules.
Choose the correct equipment for the location
Choose a flush or surface-mounted box according to the wall, and a socket outlet with an ingress protection rating (IP) that suits the room — higher IP in damp and outdoor environments. New installations from 1 January 2026 must comply with DS 60884-2-D1.
New standardDS 60884-2-D1 (from 2026)Strip the conductors to the right length
Strip L, N and PE so that the copper sits fully inside the terminal with no bare conductor outside. Stripping too much creates a risk of contact; too little gives poor contact and overheating.
Connect with the correct colours and polarity
Connect the protective conductor (PE, green/yellow) to the earth terminal, neutral (N, blue) and line (L, brown/black/grey) to their respective terminals. Never swap line and neutral — correct polarity is a check point in the verification.

Tighten all terminals well, and pull lightly on each conductor to check that it is secure. Fix the insert in the box plumb, and fit the cover/frame so that there are no gaps or open holes.
Test polarity and function
Switch on the power and use a polarity tester to check that line, neutral and PE are correctly connected and that there is an earth connection. If the socket is on an RCD-protected circuit, it is included in the RCD test.
A socket tester quickly reveals swapped L/N and missing PE — use it as a standard final check.
