The gardener's trade: growing in the open field and in greenhouses — and the training

2026-10-06·6 min reading

The gardener grows ornamental plants, trees, shrubs and vegetables in the open field and in greenhouses. Here are the greenhouses in figures from BBR, how the gardener programme is structured from 1 August 2026, and how it ends with a school exam and a certificate of education.

Introduction

The gardener grows and looks after plants: ornamental plants, trees, shrubs and vegetables. This happens both in the open field and in protected environments such as greenhouses. The gardener also sells the plants (Executive Order 73/2026 § 1). Where the landscape gardener builds the garden, it is often the gardener who has grown the plants for it.

Greenhouses in figures

The BBR building register has 3,445 buildings registered as greenhouses (measured 06-10-2026 via Grundfast). The chart shows where they are. Notice that they are clustered, especially on Funen.

Greenhouses by municipality
not looked up The register did not respond, or it does not cover this property yet. That does not mean there is no value.

Remember what the figure is: buildings, not nurseries and not square metres under glass. One nursery can have many greenhouses, and BBR does not include all small or temporary greenhouses.
