Connecting an EV charging point

From a separate circuit and choice of RCD to commissioning (DS/HD 60364-7-722)

Charging points have their own part of the standard with stricter requirements: a separate circuit, a dedicated RCD and full sizing. This guide takes you through the installation according to DS/HD 60364-7-722 from cable selection to verification.

  1. Clarify power and cable run

Determine the charging point's power and the distance from the distribution board. Size the cable cross-section and fuse rating using the calculator — cable tables are only a guide and do not replace a calculation in accordance with DS/HD 60364-5-52.

Guideline 22 kW6 mm² Cu (must be verified)
  2. Check the charging point order (ladestanderbekendtgørelsen)

Check whether the building is covered by the charging point order (BEK 181/2020). It only applies to new buildings and major renovations with more than 10 parking spaces and existing non-residential buildings with more than 20 spaces. The SME exemption only applies to the requirement for 1 charging point in existing buildings. The expected new charging point order had not been issued as of 1 October 2026 — check the status.

  3. Install a separate, dedicated circuit

The charging point must have its own circuit — it must not share a circuit with other appliances. Run a dedicated cable from the distribution board, and choose a future-proof cross-section (ideally size for 22 kW / 32 A in a domestic installation).

    Simultaneity= 1 without load management
  4. Choose the RCD type based on DC detection

Obtain manufacturer documentation on whether the charging unit has approved DC fault current detection (RDC-DD ≤ 6 mA DC). If it does, type A is sufficient; if it does not, type B is required. Type AC is explicitly prohibited for charging points.

With DC blockingtype AWithout DC detectiontype B

The RCD must be dedicated to the charging point — not shared with other circuits.

  5. Mount the charging point and connect earth

Mount the charging unit on a load-bearing surface, connect the cable according to the manufacturer's instructions, and check the earth connection carefully. An intact PE is critical, as the charging unit's enclosure is an exposed conductive part.

  6. Observe the grid connection requirements

Notify the charging point to the grid company before work starts. With several single-phase charging points, distribute the load evenly across the phases so that the phase imbalance stays within the limit: 20 % of the agreed supply capacity, but always up to 16 A and never above 300 A (Common Regulations 2026, sections 2 and 8.2.1). Note the power factor conditions in the switchboard documentation.

    Phase imbalance≤ 20 % of the agreed supply capacity (always 16 A, max. 300 A)
  7. Verify and commission

Carry out inspection and testing, incl. RCD test and insulation resistance measurement, before the charging point is put into service. Update the circuit diagram and complete the verification report as documentation.
