What laws and standards govern electrician work in Denmark, and what is the hierarchy? Here is the overview of the Electrical Safety Act, the Installation Regulation and the DS/HD 60364 series — with the most important changes in 2024 and 2026.
Introduction
Electrical installation work in Denmark is regulated by a hierarchy: the framework law sets the limit, the ordinances specify the requirements, and the standards provide the technical method. If you don't know the hierarchy, you risk working by an outdated rule set.
The Electrical Safety Act.
The Electrical Safety Act (consolidated as LBK no. 57 of 19 January 2026) is the framework act for safety of electrical systems and installations. Systems and installations must be carried out and operated so that they do not pose a danger to persons, livestock or property (§ 3), and if the rules and the standards they refer to are followed, the requirement is deemed to be met (§ 7). The authorisation requirement is not found here but in the Authorisation Act (LBK no. 30 of 11 January 2019, § 2). Since 1 January 2026, the Danish Safety Authority has been part of the Danish Business Authority (the Market Surveillance department in Esbjerg), which now administers the act — the guidance is still on sik.dk. The Installation Regulation (BEK 1082/2016)
BEK no. 1082 of 12 July 2016 is still the applicable Installation Order. It replaced section 6 of the Heavy Current Regulations on 1 July 2017. If an installation is carried out according to the current edition of the DS/HD 60364 series, the safety requirement is deemed to be met (§ 3). If you choose a different solution, it must be documented that the requirement is met (§ 3(2)), and the deviation must be reported (§ 84). The Danish special requirements in §§ 17-83 must be complied with regardless (§ 3(3)). (Source: retsinformation.dk/eli/lta/2016/1082)
Autorisation og KLS — BEK 722 og 725 (2024)
Two new decrees from June 2024 tightened requirements for authorized electrical companies:
- 01BEK 722/2024: Authorisation and operation. The responsible person must be attached to the company for at least 30 hours a week within normal business hours (§ 9).
- 02BEK 725/2024: KLS regulation — the company's quality management system is approved every 2 years by external audit. Deviations must be closed within 6 months.
The DS/HD 60364 series — Handbook 183:2026
The DS/HD 60364 series is the complete technical standard for electrical installations in Denmark. It is published collectively in Handbook 183, which Danish Standards now publishes in a new edition every year. The latest is Handbook 183:2026, published on 1 July 2026. In it, four parts have been corrected or updated:
- 014-444: Protection against voltage disturbances and electromagnetic disturbances (correction, no new requirements).
- 027-706: Conducting locations with restricted movement (correction).
- 037-710: Medical locations (updated sections on installations in medical locations; the specific requirements are in the standard itself).
- 048-82: Prosumers' low-voltage installations (local generation and storage).
The previous edition, Handbook 183:2025 (September 2025), changed five parts: 5-52 (new Annex E on harmonic currents), 5-53 (switchgear, editorial only), 7-701 (bath and shower, relaxations), 7-706 and 7-708 (camping sites). Chapter 42 with a general requirement for arc fault detection devices (AFDD) was expected but was included in neither the 2025 nor the 2026 edition.
| Section | Subject | Changed in the 2025 or 2026 edition? |
|---|---|---|
| 4-41 | Protection against electric shock | No |
| 4-43 | Overcurrent protection | No |
| 5-52 | Cable sizing | 2025: new Annex E |
| 6 | Verification | No |
| 7-701 | Bathroom | 2025: relaxations |
| 7-710 | Medical locations | 2026: new requirements |
| 7-722 | Charging stations for electric cars | No (current: DS/HD 60364-7-722:2018 with corrections from 2021 and 2022) |
| 8-82 | Prosumer installations | 2026: updated |
New plug socket requirements from 1 January 2026
DS 60884-2-D1:2023 sets new requirements for household electrical outlets and plugs and is mandatory from 1 January 2026. The 'blind hole' type (DKA 1-3a) is permitted until 31 December 2027. New installations from 2026 must comply with the new standard. (Source: ds.dk news archive 2025/09)
