Renew code 95 — 35-hour further training

Plan and complete the further training in time

Code 95 (the driver qualification card) is the requirement for driving a bus professionally, and it must be renewed every 5 years with at least 35 hours of approved periodic training. The guide is a step-by-step plan from checking the expiry date to a new card — including the timing trick that ensures you do not lose time when renewing.

  1. Find the certificate's expiry date

Check the expiry date on the code 95 card (the EU card) or on the code 95 endorsement on your driving licence. The card is valid for 5 years at a time, and you must not drive professionally once it has expired.

  2. Plan well ahead

Schedule the refresher training no later than around six months before expiry. Training places are limited and fill up in popular periods, so booking early prevents you from being left without a valid certificate.

  3. Choose an approved training centre

Choose a provider from Færdselsstyrelsen's list of approved centres. Only approved periodic training counts towards the 35 hours — a random course does not.

  4. Consider distance learning

Up to 12 of the 35 hours can be taken as distance learning with the provider. This gives flexibility in a busy schedule — ask the provider how they organise the distance and attendance parts.

  5. Coordinate with the employer

Agree release from the duty roster and any course funding with your employer in good time. Many haulage firms pay for or subsidise further training — but it has to be planned into operations.

  6. Complete the 35 hours

Attend the whole course, which is typically run as a 5-day AMU course with classroom teaching and practical training. The modules may include disability awareness training, ecodriving, driving/rest times, safety and passenger handling.

  7. Use the 3-month window so you do not lose time

If you take the refresher training within the last 3 months before expiry, the new 5 years run from the old certificate's expiry date — not from the course date. So you do not lose the time by taking the course early. Verify this against Færdselsstyrelsen's current guidance.

    Timing window3 months before expiry

Take the periodic training within the last 3 months before expiry — then the new 5 years start from the old expiry date.

  8. Get the new certificate and update the overview

The training centre reports completion to Færdselsstyrelsen, and you receive a new code 95 certificate with a new 5-year validity. Enter the new expiry date in your qualification overview together with your driving licence, medical certificate and first-aid certificate so nothing expires unexpectedly.
