Speed, speed limiter and Tempo 100 on buses

The speed limits for buses, the 100 km/h limiter and the conditions for Tempo 100

2026-10-06·6 min reading

A bus over 3,500 kg may drive at most 80 km/h — 100 km/h on motorways if it meets the Tempo 100 conditions. Here are the speed limits, the speed limiter and the Tempo 100 conditions, including why standing passengers mean 80.

Introduction

The bus's speed is limited in two places: in the law and in the bus itself. The law says how fast you may drive. The speed limiter makes sure the bus cannot go faster than a set limit.

Speed limiter

A bus in class M3 must have a speed limiter set so that the speed cannot exceed 100 km/h (BEK no. 1484 of 03/12/2025, Annex 1, item 7.01.023). Only a workshop authorised for tachographs may install, adjust and seal it. After every intervention, the workshop puts a new installation sticker in the cab showing, among other things, the set speed (§§ 25-27).
